The microscopic shells of marine organisms known as planktonic foraminifera hold a detailed chemical record of past climate and ocean conditions. New techniques applied by a UW—Madison group help refine estimates of climate from 56 million years ago when the Earth experienced a remarkable climate episode that mirrors what climatologists believe is happening to Earth today. At death, their calcium carbonate shells rain to the ocean floor where they form layers of sediment, providing a continuous fossil record dating back million years.
The geological time scale is used by geologists and paleontologists to measure the history of the Earth and life. It is based on the fossils found in rocks of different ages and on radiometric dating of the rocks. Sedimentary rocks made from mud, sand, gravel or fossil shells and volcanic lava flows are laid down in layers or beds.

This refers to the fact that fossils are the remains of past life preserved in rock, soil or amber. Generally, the remains were once the hard parts of an organism, such as bones and shell although, under exceptional circumstances, soft tissues have also fossilised. There are different types of fossils because remains can be preserved in a variety of ways.
A subfossil is a part of a dead organism that is partially, rather than fully, fossilized, as is a fossil. Partial fossilization may be present because not enough time has elapsed since the animal died for full fossilization, or because the conditions in which the remains were deposited were not optimal for fossilization. For remains such as molluscan seashellswhich frequently do not change their chemical composition over geological time, and may occasionally even retain such features as the original color markings for millions of years, the label "subfossil" is applied to shells that are understood to be thousands of years old, but are of Holocene age, and therefore are not old enough to be from the Pleistocene epoch.
