A t the end ofthe journalist Jerry Ewing pitched an idea for a new magazine to a publishing company. His idea was a magazine dedicated entirely to progressive rock, long reviled in the critical mainstream as the apotheosis of the musical excess of the pre-punk 70s, a largely forgotten realm of concept albums, difficult time signatures and extraordinary instrumental virtuosity. There seems little doubt Ewing is right about the tidal shift.

Clubbers who have made "Get Lucky" this summer's dance-floor anthem will be shocked to hear that Daft Punk aren't the robot-friendly sound of the future — but revivalists of Seventies progressive rock, once the most derided of genres. Prog, a bombastic mutation of rock and classical genres typically performed by highly skilled musicians in outrageous capes, could once be heard echoing from student halls and stadiums across the land. In the end it was punk that swept away those highly designed concept albums with their epic or medieval themes and ostentatious, lengthy, and, some would say, self-indulgent displays of musical proficiency.
Progressive metal sometimes known as prog metal is a fusion genre melding heavy metal and progressive rock that combines the loud "aggression"  and amplified guitar -driven sound of the former with the more experimental, cerebral or "pseudo-classical" compositions of the latter. Whilst the genre emerged towards the lates, it was not until the s that progressive metal achieved commercial success. These bands form the so-called triad, the "Big Three"  of prog metal, or the most important and influential groups of the traditional scene. Canadian trio Rush are widely recognised as bridging the gap between the hard rock period, English prog and the purely heavy metal genre.
